Busy with applique

Zondag kregen we deel 2 van de Love Entwined, maar terwijl we daar met vele op aan het wachten waren, maakte ik twee blokjes voor de Antique Sampler.

Sunday we get part 2 of the Love Entwined, but while we all where waiting for it, I made 2 blocks for the Antique Sampler.

Toen we laat in de middag deel 2 kregen, begon ik eerst met de ondergrond lap. Horizontaal, vertikaal, en kruislings maakte ik rijglijnen, zodat ik beter zie waar de applicaties moeten komen.

When we got part 2 late in the afternoon, I began with the back fabric. First I made horizontal, vertical and cross lines, so I can see better where the applique has to come.

Daarna reeg ik ook een draad rondom en op 1.5 inch daarbinnen waar de zigzagrand moet komen.

Then I baste a thread all around and 1.5 inch inside of it where the zigzagborder has to come.

Als eerste begon ik met het kompas en appliceerde dat in het midden. Daarna tekende ik op de achterkant van het stof de driehoekjes rondom het kompas en deed ze meteen doorrijgen.

First I began with the compass and applique that in place. Then I drew the triangles on the back of the fabric around the compass and made a basting stitch over them.

Op deze manier zie ik aan de voorkant precies waar de driehoekjes moeten komen.

This way I see on the front where the triangles has to come.

Eentje staat er op, nu nog de andere 19 doen ;-)

Als die er op staan, dan kan ik de kleine bloemetjes gaan doen die tussen de driehoekjes komen. De stofjes daarvoor liggen al klaar.

When I have done those, I can make the little flowers that are between the triangles. The fabric for those I have already sorted out.

Two blocks made

Nu het kompas klaar is van de LE quilt en deel 2 pas maandag komt, heb ik de laatste 2 dagen besteed aan het maken van de 2 blokjes voor de Star and Plume quilt die ik begin juli ontving.

Bij het eerste blok ging ik al meteen de fout in, want ik heb het in spiegelbeeld gemaakt. Ach ja, dan is mijn blokje Card Trick toch net even anders als het origineel.

Now that my compass of the LE quilt is ready and part 2 isn't released yet, I have worked the last 2 days on the 2 blocks of the Star and Plume quilt I got at the beginning of this month.

With the first block I went wrong straight away, because I made it in reverse. Oh well, then my block Card Trick is a bit different then the original.

Daarna was het de beurt aan het Log Cabin blok en ik mag het misschien niet zeggen, maar een log cabin blok vind ik helemaal niet leuk om te maken ... al die rechte lijnen. Maar goed ... ik heb hem toch gemaakt want hij hoort tenslotte in deze quilt ;-) En in het midden staan 2 schaapjes vrolijk te blaten.

Then it was time for the Log Cabin block and I may not say it, but I don't like to make a log cabin block ... all those straight lines. But ... I made it because it belongs in this quilt ;-) In the middle I have put two happy sheep.

Bowy is ook weer blij dat de zon weer schijnt, want nu kan hij weer rollebollen op het gras met zijn tennisbal.

Bowy is also glad that the sun is shining again, because now he can play with his tennis ball on the grass.

Vandaag ook weer een aantal foto's gemaakt in de tuin, zoals deze van de Abutilon die nu volop in bloei staat.

Today I also made some garden pictures, such as this one of the Abutilon which is blooming now.

Ook deze spin vind onze stokroos erg mooi ;-)

Also this spider find our Alcea Rosea very nice ;-)

Deze bloem steekt toch zeker niet zijn middelvinger naar me uit ? hihihi ...

I hope not that this flower sticks out his middle finger to me, hihihi ....

En deze ? Gewoon super mooi. Fijn weekend allemaal !

LE compass finished

Mijn kleine rondjes zitten vastgenaaid, maar in plaats van de gebruikelijk 32 zitten er maar 16 op. Waarom? Omdat ik het erg druk vond aandoen met alle 32, dat komt misschien ook omdat het rood en blauw wat donkere kleuren zijn. Voor nu laat ik het even zo, maar het kan ook zijn dat ik er een lichte kleur tussen zet, afwachten maar ...

Mijn little circles are sewed on, but instead of the normal 32 I sewed only 16. Why ? Because it looked a bit busy with the 32, but maybe that is because the red and blue are darker colors. For now I will leave it this way, but maybe I will put some light color in between, we will wait and see ...

Love Entwined part 1

Nu heb ik dus nog 16 kleine rondjes over, maar als je naar het totaal plaatje van de quilt hebt gekeken dan weet je dat er nog HEEL VEEL rondjes gemaakt moeten gaan worden, dus deze 16 zullen zeker nog gebruikt gaan worden ;-)

Now I have 16 circles over, but if you have seen the picture of the complete quilt, then you know that there are MANY MORE circles to come, so they will be use in another part of the quilt ;-)

In de tuin staan nu ook de stokrozen te bloeien en ik vind die zo mooi. 

In the garden we have several Alcea rosea blooming and I realy like those.

En ook de distel staat op open gaan. Een distel in de tuin? Jahoor bij ons wel. De meeste mensen halen een distel meteen weg als ze hem zien, maar wij hebben er een laten staan omdat hij gewoon erg mooi is.

And the thistle is ready to be open. A thistle in the garden? Yes sure in our garden. Most people will take away thistles when they see it in their garden, but we left one to grow because we think its beautiful.

LE ring and circles

In het weekend heb ik niet veel aan quilten gedaan, maar gisteren heb ik bijna de hele tijd buiten gezeten, werkend aan mijn 2e kompas. Uhhh ... 2e kompas ? Er zit toch maar 1 kompas in de LE (Love Entwined)? 

This weekend I didn't do much quilting, but yesterday I sat most of my time outside, working on my second compass. Uhhh ... second compass? There is only one compass in the LE (Love Entwined), isn't?

Oxalis iron cross

Ja dat klopt, maar ik kwam er achter dat kompas 1 een stuk kleiner was uitgevallen (geen idee hoe dat gekomen is) en daardoor paste de ring er niet om. Nu ik wist hoe een kompas in elkaar zat, was die 2e een fluitje van een cent. Bovendien kon ik mooi de licht- en donkerblauwe stukjes in het kompas omruilen van plaats en dat vind ik toch mooier.

Yes thats true, but I found out that compass 1 was smaller then it should be (don't know how that is happen) and thats why my ring didn't fit. Now I knew how to make a compass, so compass 2 was a piece of cake. Beside now I could switch the light and dark blue with each other and I think that looks nicer.

Kompas 2 was ongeveer de maat wat het moest zijn en gelukkig paste de ring er nu wel om. Ik heb hem met reverse applique vastgezet.

Compass 2 had the size what it should be, so luckily the ring fits now. I sewed it on in reverse applique.

Nu kan ik dan eindelijk verder met de kleine 1/4 inch (6,3 mm.) rondjes. Ik heb er inmiddels al een aantal klaar, ... weten jullie gelijk wat ik vanavond aan het doen ben ;-)

Now I can go on with making the little 1/4 inch circles. I already made a few, ... now you also know what I'm doing tonight ;-)

Ik kreeg een aantal mailtjes met de vraag hoe ik die kleine rondjes maak, dus dat laat ik meteen even zien. Ik knip geen kartonnen malletjes, maar gebruik metalen opvulringetjes die heel plat zijn.

I did get some emails with the question how I make those little circles, so I will explain. I don't cut any board circles, but I use thin washers, who are very flat.

Dan knip ik een iets groter rondje uit het stof en maak rondom rijgsteekjes, iets van de kant.

Then I cut a something bigger circle out the fabric and do basting stitches around.

Dan neem ik mijn kwast die ik in de textielversteviger heb gedoopt en maak het randje nat.

Then I take some spray starch and put that on the outside of the circle.

Leg daarna het ringetje in het midden ...

Then put the washer in the middle ...

... en trek de draad aan zodat deze zich om de ring sluit.

... and pull the thread tight, so it goes around the washer.

Dan zet ik hierop het strijkijzer voor enkele seconden en als je hem dan omdraait heb je een perfect rondje. Even af laten koelen en je kunt het opvulringetje eruit halen. Daarna zijn ze klaar om ze ergens op te naaien.

Then I put my iron on it for a few seconds and then when you turn it, you have a perfect circle. Let them cool off and then you can take out the washer. Now they are ready to sew on.

Ik ga er nog een aantal maken en wie weet, krijg ik de meeste vanavond vastgezet rond de cirkel van het kompas.

I'm going to make some more and who knows how many I can sew on tonight in the circle around the compass.

Love Entwined compass

Van de week kwam ook mijn achtergrondstof binnen voor de Love Entwined quilt van Esther Aliu. Het is Kona Snow, een zacht room witte kleur. Op de foto is hij wat witter dan hij in werkelijkheid is.

This week I got the background for the Love Entwined quilt from Esther Aliu. Its Kona Snow, a soft creamy white color. In the pictures it looks more white then it is in real.

Tijd om het eerste deel (het kompas) te gaan maken, dus werden alle patroondeeltjes op freezerpaper getekend, die daarna weer op stof gestreken werden. Daarna met potlood rondom elk malletje een naailijn getekend en toen kon het ineen zetten beginnen. Voor mij de eerste keer dat ik een kompas moest maken.

Time to begin with part 1 (the compass), so I drew each piece onto freezerpaper, which I then iron onto the fabric. Then I drew with a pencil a sewline around the templates and I could began  with the sewing. This is the first compass I have made.

Ik heb dan ook geen idee of ik de goede naai volgorde aanhield, maar op deze manier werkte het prima voor mij.

I didn't have a clue if I worked in a good order, but it worked for me.

Wat zitten er toch veel puntjes in een kompas maar gelukkig had ik daar niet veel moeite mee en inmiddels staat die helemaal in elkaar. Ik heb hem op het stof gelegd waar ik de ring, die om het kompas komt, van ga maken en dat stof ligt weer op de Kona Snow.

A compass has so many parts, but luckily I didn't have a problem with that and soon it was done. I laid it onto the fabric that is for the ring that comes around the compass and that one lays again onto the Kona Snow.

Nu kan ik de ring erom gaan maken en daarna 32 rondjes die weer op de ring komen. Deze rondjes zijn ontzettend klein, iets meer dan 6 mm (1/4 inch). Ik had er vanmiddag een geprobeerd te maken en die is prima gelukt, nu de rest nog ;-)

Now I can began with sewing the ring and then making 32 circles, those will be sewed onto the ring. The circles are very small, only 1/4 inch. I tried one this afternoon and I think it work, now only 31 to go ;-)

Tussendoor even buiten genieten bij de vijver, waar de wilde bos aardbeitjes nu een hele rand bedekken.

In between I enjoy the pond in the garden, where the wild strawberries cover an entire edge.

Het rood van de wilde bos aardbeitjes steekt zo mooi af tegen de groene blaadjes.

The red of the wild strawberries sticks out so beautiful against the green leaves.

Love Entwined adventure begins ...

Eindelijk kan mijn Love Entwined avontuur, dat 18 maanden gaat duren, gaan beginnen. Ik was er al eerder klaar voor, maar mijn stofjes nog niet ;-)

Finally my Love Entwined adventure can begin. I was ready for a few days, but my fabrics weren't ;-) 

Love Entwined: 1790 Marriage Coverlet

Toen ik de quilt voor het eerst zag wist ik meteen dat ik hem in de kleuren oud rood, rose, allerlei groene, okergeel en antiek blauw wilde maken. Ik had alle stofjes in voorraad, behalve 2 mooie antiek blauwe. Gelukkig waren we afgelopen zaterdag bij The Log Cabin (waar we weer gezellig bijkletsten met Marianne, Sis, Elly en Cindy) maar helaas geen antiekblauw te ontdekken. Dus vanmiddag opnieuw met Michiel naar een quiltwinkel en daar lagen de 2 antiek blauwe stofjes gewoon op me te wachten !!

When I first saw the quilt I knew I wanted to make it in antique reds, rose, all kind of greens, ochre and antique blues. I had all the fabrics in my stash except for the blues. Luckily we were at a quiltshop this weekend (and had a nice chat with friends Marianne, Sis, Elly and Cindy), but the shop hadn't the blue I was looking for. So this afternoon my husband and I drove to another quiltshop and there where 2 antique blues looking at me, the colors I want !!

Toen we later in de middag thuis kwamen, ben ik eerst netjes gaan koken (en dat was best moeilijk, want ik wilde kleuren voor het middenstuk, de kompas, gaan uitzoeken). Maar na het eten was ik niet meer te houden ... ik legde de 2 blauwe stofjes neer bij de rest die ik al klaar had liggen en ik ben helemaal tevreden over mijn kleurkeuze.

When we got home, I first began cooking because it was dinner time (and that was hard because I wanted to look for colors for part 1, the compass). But after dinner I went straight to the table with all the fabrics. I put my blues with all the fabrics from my stash to see how it looks and I'm very please with my colors.

Daarna was het zoeken welke stofjes ik in het kompas (deel 1) wilde en na veel neerleggen, wegleggen, opnieuw oppakken, twijfel, twijfel .... toch maar wel erbij, is mijn keuze gevallen op deze 6 stofjes. Ik kan nu ECHT gaan beginnen !!

Then it was searching for fabrics that I want to put in my compass, this one or that, putting down, picking up again, doubt, doubt, which one? But finally my choice are these six colors. I can now REALLY start with part 1 !!

En weet je wat ook fantastisch was ? Vanmiddag kwam met de post een cadeautje van Jane. Ze stuurde mij het boek Patchwork van Averil Colby en wat is nu zo speciaal aan dit boek? Zie je het uitstekende kaartje?

And do you know what also is very fantastic? This afternoon came a present with the post from Jane. She send me the book Patchwork from Averil Colby. And what is so special about this book? Do you see the card that is sticking out of the book?

Dit is namelijk het boek waar de Love Entwined quilt in staat (in het zwart-wit) en dat moet je gewoon hebben als je die quilt gaat maken, zegt Jane en dus stuurde ze mij dit boek op. Lief van haar nietwaar? ... en je weet het Jane .... ik ben in de 7e hemel met dit boek !

This is the book that has a picture of the Love Entwined quilt (in black-white) and you have to have that book says Jane, so she send me one. Isn't that nice of her? ... and you already know it Jane ... I'm in heaven with this book !!
