First stars are born

De afgelopen dagen ben ik druk bezig geweest om stofjes bij elkaar te zoeken voor The Rowdy Flat Library quilt van Susan Smith, maar ik zocht er ook bij elkaar voor de nieuwe BOM van Sarah Fielke, genaamd Happy Days (klik). Tenslotte heb ik daar de eerste 2 maanden al van binnen. Voor maand 1 moeten er 24 sterren gemaakt worden, nu hoeven die niet allemaal deze maand klaar te zijn, maar ik heb ze inmiddels wel al allemaal geknipt. Eerst werden alle driehoekjes geknipt, 8 per sterretje.

The last few days I have been busy with sorting out my fabrics for The Rowdy Flat Library quilt from Susan Smith, but I also picked my fabrics for the new BOM of Sarah Fielke, called Happy Days (click). After all, the first 2 months are already been released. For month 1 we have to do 24 stars, we don't have to make them all in this first month, but I already cut out all the pieces. First I cut all the little triangles, 8 for each star.

Voor het middenstuk van elke ster ga ik dit lieve stofje gebruiken. Het heet Little Darlings en is van Henry Glass.

For the middle part of each star I'm going to use this lovely fabric. It is called Little Darlings and it is from Henry Glass.

En als je 24 afbeeldingen uit knipt, dan hou je een soort van gatenkaas lap over ;-)

And when you cut out 24 prints, you being left with a sort of Swiss Cheese fabric ;-)

Daarna moesten de achtergrond stofjes nog geknipt worden. Ik heb gekozen voor off white stofjes met kleine printjes, zoals hondjes, bloempjes, vlinders etc.

Then I have to cut out all those background fabrics. I have choosing for off white fabrics with  small prints, such as dogs, flowers, butterflies etc.

Daarna maar meteen wat sterretjes gemaakt, de eerste 3 zijn inmiddels af en ik vind ze zelf enorm leuk geworden. Het blijft altijd spannend om te zien of het wordt zoals je in je hoofd hebt.

Then I made some stars, the first 3 are made and I realy like them. It is always exciting to see if they turn out as you thought they would.

Piece and Plenty quilt top finished

Dit quiltavontuur begon in de 1e week van januari. Jeannet (klik) en daarna vele andere, begonnen aan de Piece and Plenty quilt van Moda (klik voor het gratis patroon). 

This quilt adventure started the first week of january. Jeannet (click) and then many more people started the Piece and Plenty quilt from Moda (click for the free pattern).

 

Niet alle blokjes zijn volgens het patroon, soms heb ik er iets aan veranderd. 

Not all the blocks are made according to the pattern, sometimes I made some changes.

De bedoeling was 1 blok per maand te doen, maar de mandjes waren te verslavend om er steeds mee te wachten tot de maand om was. 

The intention was to make 1 block each month, but the baskets were such fun to make, that it was to hard to wait another month.

 

Met als resultaat dat op deze 1e lentedag de quilt top helemaal in elkaar staat.

With the result that on this first spring day the quilt top is finished.

 

Ik heb hem nu even aan de kant gelegd. Het doorquilten is voor een andere keer, want ik ga eerst beginnen met de Rowdy Flat Library quilt van Susan Smith. Afgelopen zaterdag vond ik een mooi stofje met "oude" afbeeldingen die perfect zijn voor deze quilt. Als ondergrondstof koos ik voor een lichte zand kleur en een blauw/groen streepje voor de bias cirkels.

For now I have put the quilt top away. The quilting is for later, because I want to start with The Rowdy Flat Library quilt from Susan Smith. Last saturday I found some lovely fabric with "old looking" prints that were perfect for this quilt. For the background I choose a light sand color and a blue/green stripe for the bias circles.

Very last filler blocks

Op een paar plaatsen in de quilt moesten er blokjes gemaakt worden met hele kleine vierkantjes of blokken die bestonden uit smalle stroken. Beide heb ik niet gemaakt, maar in plaats daarvan maakte ik deze blokken. 

On a few places in the quilt I had to make blocks with very little squares or blocks with many strips. I didn't make those, but I made these instead.

Dan waren er ook nog 6 opvulblokjes die gewoon uit 1 lapje stof bestonden. Ook dat was niet naar mijn zin en dus koos ik voor lichte achtergrondstoffen waarop ik zelf bloemtakken heb geappliceerd.

Then there were 6 filler blocks  who were made from 1 fabric. I didn't like that either, so I choose for some lighter fabric and I appliqued some flower branches on it.

Kijk, ... dat vind ik nu veel leuker :-)

Nu kan ik eindelijk de quilt in elkaar gaan zetten !

Basket month 15

Vandaag het allerlaatste mandje van de Piece and Plenty quilt, een gratis patroon van Moda dat HIER (klik) te downloaden is. Bij dit mandje zijn op het patroon een paar knopen genaaid, maar die heb ik achterwege gelaten. In plaats daarvan heb ik gewoon wat rondjes geappliceerd. Bij een gebruiksquilt vind ik dit wat prettiger.

Today the very last basket from the Piece and Plenty quilt, a free pattern from Moda which you can download HERE (click). On the pattern some buttons were sewed, but I didn't do that. In stead I made some circles. When you use a quilt I find that more pleasant.

Ik hoor jullie al denken, ... nu kan ze de quilt in elkaar gaan zetten, maar dat is niet het geval. Ik moet nog een paar opvulblokjes maken en daar ga ik iets speciaals mee doen. Dat zien jullie in mijn volgende berichtje ;-)

I hear you thinking, ... now she can assemble the quilt, but that is not the case. I still have to make a few filler blocks and I'm going to do something special with those. You will see it in my next message ;-)

Basket month 14

Het mandje voor maand 14 was enorm leuk om te maken, eerst weer mooie kleurtjes uitzoeken en daarna het mandje in elkaar zetten. Toen dat gedaan was, werden de aardbei en blaadjes geappliceerd. Een blok dat heel snel klaar was. Nog 1 mandje te gaan ;-)

The basket for month 14 was such fun to make, first I looked for some lovely colors and then I sewed the basket. When that was done, I could applique the strawberry and the leaves. A block that was made real fast. Only 1 basket to go.

Filler block month 14

Dit opvul blokje heb ik helemaal zelf verzonnen, een mooie bloemtak met erboven een bruin stofje met roosjes.

This filler block I invented myself, a beautiful flower branch with on top a brown fabric with roses.

Op het eigenlijk opvul blokje moest het jaartal geappliceerd worden, maar dat vond ik niet zo mooi.

On the original filler block I had to applique the year date, but I didn't like that.

 

Basket month 13

En dan zijn we alweer aangekomen aan het mandje voor maand 13. Een blauw geruit stofje heb ik gebruikt voor het mandje en rode en roze bloempjes fleuren alles op.

And then we come to the basket for month 13. I used a blue checker fabric for the basket and red and pink flowers brighten everything.

Filler blocks month 13

Er moesten 2 soorten opvul blokjes gemaakt worden voor deze maand. De 2 sterrenblokken maakte ik met zacht groene stofjes.

I had to make 2 kinds of filler blocks for this month. The 2 star blocks I made with soft green fabrics.

Het kleine flying geese blokje maakte ik in het blauw.

Basket month 12

Om het middenstuk van dit blok moest een rand gemaakt worden van allemaal driehoekjes. Het lijkt veel werk, maar toch was het zo gebeurd.

For this block I had to make a border with little triangles. It looks like a lot of work, but it was done very quick.

Voor het mandje moesten er allemaal smalle reepjes aan elkaar gezet worden, maar dat was wel leuk werk. Daarna kon ik de bloem en blaadjes appliceren.

For the basket I had to sew all kind of small strips together, that was fun work. After that I could applique the flower and the leaves.

Filler blocks month 12

Vier kleine mandjes als opvulblokjes voor maand 12. Ik heb ze in het roze gemaakt en ze waren ook weer snel klaar.

Four little baskets as filler blocks for month 12. I made them in pink and they were made fast.

Inmiddels ben ik ook al begonnen met het grote mandje voor deze maand.

Filler blocks month 11

Er moesten 3 opvulblokjes gemaakt worden voor maand 11. Ik heb gekozen voor blauwe bloemenstofjes. Romantische sterren ;-)

I had to make 3 filler blocks for month 11. I choose blue flowers fabric for it. Romantic stars ;-)

Making a Simple Circles ruler

Voor het nieuwe patroon van Susan Smith moeten er grote cirkels getekend worden en ik vroeg me af hoe ik dat zou gaan doen als ik aan het patroon begon. Nu liet Susan een Simple Circles ruler zien (te koop bij sommige quiltwinkels) waar zij dit mee doet en je kunt dan cirkels maken tot 22 inch.

Na even gezocht te hebben op internet kwam ik al snel tot de ontdekking dat hier een behoorlijk prijskaartje aan hangt, dus ik liet Michiel de foto zien van de liniaal. Die is wel zelf te maken was zijn antwoord.

Ik had nog een oude transparante liniaal van 50 cm. liggen ...

For the new pattern of Susan Smith you have to draw large circles and I was wondering how I had to do this. Then Susan showed her Simple Circles ruler which she uses and you can draw circles up to 22 inch diameter.

When I looked on the internet I saw they had a high price tag, so I showed Michiel a picture of the ruler. I can make this myself, was his answer.

I had a old transparant ruler of 50 cm. lying ...

Ik legde hem op mijn grote snijmat en tekende met een watervaste stift een klein stipje op elke halve inch.

I put it on my large cutting mat and draw with a permanent pen a little dot on each half inch.

Michiel boorde met een heel klein boortje de gaatjes erin, waar precies je potlood in past.

Michiel made little holes with his drill, perfect to fit your pencil.

Aan het begin van de liniaal maakte hij een nog iets kleiner gaatje waar een speld in past. Dit is het middelpunt van je cirkel. Ook korte hij de liniaal in tot 35 cm., zodat ik nu cirkels kan maken tot een grote van 26 inch doorsnee. Het werkt perfect !

At the beginning of the ruler Michiel made a even smaller hole which I can put in a pin. This is the middle point of the circle. He also made my ruler a bit shorter too 35 cm,so now I can draw circles up to 26 inch. It works perfectly !

Basket month 11

Het mandje van maand 11 was ook een leeg mandje op het patroon, maar ik heb het weer gevuld. Niet met bloemen dit keer, maar met een Jack Russel Terriër. Mijn favoriete hond moest gewoon een plaatsje krijgen in deze quilt.

The basket of month 11 was again an empty basket on the pattern, but I filled it. This time not with flowers, but with a Jack Russel Terriër. My favorite dog just had to get a place in this quilt.

De hengsel van de mand moest eigenlijk gemaakt worden met yo-yo's, maar ik heb gekozen voor gewoon rondjes te appliceren. Er moesten heel veel rondjes gemaakt worden, 27 in totaal.

The handle of the basket had to be made with yo-yo's, but I choose to applique circles. I had to make many circles, 27 in total.

Dit was weer een erg leuke mand om te maken.

I realy liked making this basket.

 

Basket month 10

Omdat in dit mandje geen bloemen kwamen, heb ik gekozen voor een vrolijk bloemen stofje, zodat het mandje toch mooi gevuld is. Een blok dat heel snel gemaakt is.

Because this basket had no flowers, I choose for a pretty flower fabric, so that the basket is still filled nicely. A block that was made very fast.

Basket month 9

Het mandje van maand 9 is blauw met bruin geworden. Eerst werd het middenstuk gemaakt en daarna kwamen de zijkanten eraan.  De rode bloemen en blauwe bloemknopjes stonden er weer snel op.

The basket of month 9 is made with blue and brown. First I made the middle part and then I sewed the left and right side on. The red flowers and blue flowers buds were done in no-time.
